The benefits of living seasonally
Share
At the Sundial, we focus on connecting with our environment and aligning with nature by marking seasonal changes and adjusting our routines and practices to reflect the changing seasons.
We do this because celebrating and marking the seasons helps align human life with natural rhythms, offering significant emotional, physical, and psychological benefits, such as reduced stress, improved wellbeing, and a stronger sense of connection to nature and community. By observing the shifts in weather, light, and nature, we create meaningful pauses in our busy lives, allowing us to process change and appreciate the world around us. And we want to live rich, meaningful lives that align with our values.
Celebrating and marking the seasons:
- Aligns with Natural Rhythms: Humans are part of nature, and aligning our internal temperaments with the outward shifts in the world—like the renewal of spring or the rest of winter—brings a sense of ease, flow, and pleasure.
- Enhances Mindfulness and Wellbeing: Paying attention to seasonal changes helps keep us present and mindful. Seasonal rituals reduce stress and anxiety by encouraging us to slow down, adapt, and appreciate the present moment rather than just the next task.
- Creates Family and Community Bonds: Marking seasons with rituals (like nature walks, seasonal cooking, or decorating) creates cherished memories and strengthens relationships, particularly for children. It also connects us to our community through shared cultural traditions.
- Provides Structure and Stability: In an unpredictable world, the cycle of the seasons offers a reliable, consistent, and grounding rhythm. It reminds us that all phases—joyful or difficult—are temporary.
- Promotes Connection to Ancestors: Observing seasons helps us connect with our slower, agrarian ancestors, fostering a sense of perspective and continuity.
- Encourages Personal Growth and Reflection: Each season brings unique energy, allowing us to reflect on our achievements, re-evaluate goals, and foster gratitude.
- Fosters Environmental Stewardship: By noticing the first snowdrop or the changing leaves, we deepen our relationship with the earth and encourage a desire to protect it.
There are many easy, joyful ways to celebrate seasonal shifts - find events in your local community, visit farms and pick seasonable produce, celebrate equinoxes and solstices, change your recipes seasonally and consciously adjust your rhythms and routines (an easy one for instance is going to bed earlier in autumn and winter).
